We knew that Rye only needed a draw to secure a playoff spot. The final day came down to three teams able to take the two remaining slots. We were able to put out another big squad this week. Useful as the temperature begins to climb. The first half Rye showed some dominance. The passing was good. The defence was very solid. From such control chances are bound to come. The first goal came from a crash ball to Sukhi who deflected past the keeper. Rye were 2-0 up before half time when Nico managed to get to baseline, slip, and whilst trying to stand up, flick it past the keeper from a tight angle. Everyone looked surprised, except Nico, who admired his goal and his lovely sun tan.
The half time clichés poured life giving sustenance onto the team, like the mighty Nile itself. However, Rye contrived to make life hard for them selves again. In fairness the second performance was decent. Islanders changed to a more attacking formation and the heat sapped the energy. The game turned into something more end to end. Rye had further very good chances that could have ended the contest. Unfortunately, Islanders scored from open play fairly early in the half. Then again, fairly late, from a short corner. Both sides had chances before the end of the game, but neither team had the cutting edge to make sure of their own qualification. The final whistle was welcome, without being desperately needed.
The Rye team seemed a long way from qualification at the end of the Autumn season. To come back so strongly has been most enjoyable. Congratulations to the everyone that played in both the Autumn and Spring seasons.
