Rye started very well in the game, with a decent tempo and plenty of possession. Chances began to come from open play and short corners. Nothing hit the backboard and the tension in the team began to mount. Islanders looked to catch us on the break and also began to create some presentable chances. The end of the first half came with too many shots straight at the keeper and a general lack of composure at the key moment, leaving the game in balance.
The second half started well and the first goal of the game came in the first 5 minutes. Abdel going round the keeper and finishing from a difficult angle. The goal was deserved on the balance of chances, but a team that misses so many chances is asking for trouble. From then on Rye continued to show a lack of composure and continually turned our own possession to a fast counter attacking team. The second half was a long one for Rye, but we held out. The work rate to end the game with a clean sheet and the win was great. The other side of that same coin is more care with the ball would have stymied the opponent’s chances.
